Meet our Pastors.....

Beth Fogle-Miller                      Drew Weseman                           Carrie Yoder

Senior Pastor                                 Associate Pastor                            Pastor of Discipleship

                                                                                                                                                & Family Ministries

Pastor Beth earned her Masters of Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory.  She has been active in the Florida Annual Conference for over 40 years and in 1976 she became the first youth elected from Florida to the UM General Conference.  More recently she served five years as "Director of Connectional Ministries" for the  Annual Conference.
Her ministerial experience is extensive.   She and husband Jim both served as associate pastors at First UMC in Hendersonville, Tennessee in the mid eighties.  In 1991, she and Jim became the first clergy couple appointed by the Florida Conference to lead a church as co-pastors (Arlington UMC in Jacksonville).   They later served as co-pastors again in Winter Haven beginning in 2000.     Beth came to MUMC in 2013.   She quickly found a home here, both in the county seat town of Fernandina Beach and in the "grace filled community" she nourishes at Memorial United Methodist Church.

Associate Pastor Drew Weseman is a native of Gainesville, Florida. Drew did his undergraduate work at Florida Southern College where he majored in Religion with a minor in History. He earned his Masters of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School in 2014. During seminary Drew studied for a year at the Wesley Study Centre in Durham, UK. Drew and his wife Jessica married in January of 2014. They recently welcomed a baby boy, Malachi Emmanuel. They have a cat named Francis Asbury and a frog named Pippin.  As Associate Pastor Drew works with Pastor Beth to provide pastoral care and leadership for the whole church.  His particular emphasis is congregational care and helping to connect MUMC to the outside community.  "I love being a pastor because it means that I am able to be a part of the whole spectrum of life from baptisms to confirmation, weddings, funerals, and everything in between."

Pastor Carrie comes to MUMC from Atlanta where she earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in May 2014.  She is married to Jon Yoder (since 2007) and they have one daughter, Madilyn, who was born in July 2013. Carrie is Director of Children and Family Ministries at MUMC.   In this role she works to assure that  children and family have access to and participate in all parts of the mission and vision of MUMC. "It is important that children learn to worship, study, serve and commune with God." Carrie is also in charge of Christian Education for all ages. She works to ensure that there are many different types of study opportunities available for the people of MUMC. Although she grew up in the Presbyterian Church USA, Carrie has worshiped in the Methodist Church since high school.  Her faith journey continues as she works to be ordained as Deacon and will then be able to serve in Word, Service, Compassion, and Justice:  "I feel called to work to help Christians connect to God through the church."  In the words of her favorite Bible passage (Psalm 139), Carrie wants us all to know that wherever we may go, God "is there," with us, and in us.

  • Joan Averett, Director of Music and Worship Arts/Organist

Joan did her undergraduate work at Valdosta State University where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance, and she earned a Master's degree in Organ Performance from Florida State University with a Graduate Certificate in Church Music. Joan worked 25 years for Sandersville (GA.) UMC before coming to MUMC in 2010.

She is married to Tarver Averett and they have two older children, Laura and Ed, and a younger daughter Maelee, who, as Joan says, "keeps us young." Joan sees herself less as a church musician and more as a pastoral worship leader.

Since coming to MUMC, Joan says her faith journey has been transformed: "I have found that the true blessing of God comes to a heart that is open to change and to the surprises that come with living in the grace of Jesus Christ. "

  • Monica Pomeroy, Office Manager

Originally from Syracuse, New York where she worked in Human Resources and Office Operations for an insurance company, Monica  "semi-retired" after 25 years to marry the love of her life, Peter. Monica became step-mom to 4 wonderful children who have produced 8 beautiful grand-children.

Monica and Peter found Memorial  by accident when they relocated to Fernandina because of close friends (and to get out of the cold weather in Upstate NY.) She was hired as Office Manager and thinks that joining Memorial was the best decision she ever made. She renewed her commitment to being a Christian and thanks God for bringing her here.  Monica loves walking on the beach and being “Mimi” to her 8 grandchildren.

  • Mary Ramirez, Staff Administrative Assistant

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Mary moved from Washington to Florida in 2002. She is the mother of two daughters, Rio who is 23 and Sarah who is 16 and the proud grandmother to 1-year old Marley.

In Washington, Mary worked as Director of Handicapping for the Pacific Northwest and Washington State Golf Associations. Although she made more money than she could imagine, she was discontent, and eventually moved with her two young daughters 3,000 miles across country.

As a single mother, she has known some scary times, but she has learned not to fear. "Everything we really needed, we had. We did not have cable or fancy clothes, but my kids were well taken care of loved and they knew it."

  • Marisa Gertz, Youth Ministries Intern

Marisa grew up in Lakeland in First United Methodist Church where she was active in leadership with her youth group. She is currently finishing her major at the University of North Florida and would like to pursue ordained ministry as a deacon in the United Methodist Church.

While in college, Marisa has been active in the Campus to City Wesley Foundation at UNF. She was also an adult volunteer at Crossroads Church where she led a small group, taught confirmation classes and helped develop a youth council.

She brought her combination of effervescent personality and detailed leadership to our youth at Memorial and made an instant impact!

  • Johnny Armstrong, Facilities Director

Johnny was born and raised in Callahan, Florida, and has been living in Fernandina Beach since 1990. He began working as Facilities Directory at Memorial three years ago, replacing his father, Fred Armstrong, who retired after a long tenure at Memorial.

Johnny and his wife Barbie have been living in Fernandina Beach since 1990. They have two children, Johnny and Caitlin, and one grandchild.

When Johnny is not working, you can often finding doing his favorite thing: fishing for red snapper off the coast of Fernandina! He always has a fish story to tell!

His favorite bible verse is Matthew 6:33 " But, seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

  • Carrie McCannell-Scruggs,

    Communications Coordinator

Carrie (known as "Carrie Mac") has been a member of MUMC for over 30 years, beginning her service to the church as an acolyte. She graduated from FBHS and continued on to earn a Bachelor's  in Public Relations and a Master's of Communication, both from Florida State University.

Carrie gained her professional experience through jobs with two newspaper and a TV station in Tallahassee and through non-profit advertising and corporate marketing in Tampa. Her work in Tampa even saw her managing the marketing for the Tampa Bay Lightning, including the season the team won the Stanly Cup in 2004!

In 2002,  Carrie married Steve Scruggs and the pair moved back to Fernandina Beach in 2005. Steve and Carrie have a son, Mattie, a daughter, Nola (named after their favorite city: New Orleans, LouisianA), and a rescue dog named Bayou.

Before she began officially working at Memorial in 2013, Carrie volunteered with many groups within the church and was a member of the team that helped prepare the current Strategic Plan.
